On combining landscape scenes with intimate details - The impossible Strolling through a fascinating landscape and enjoying the views has a totally different effect than looking at a photograph of the same landscape. So the question is: How to show the full picture of a landscape in just one image? Is that even possible? Landscapes that fascinate me have a lot of space, a lot of air, a certain natural order, no or very few human influences. A wide view into the distance fascinates me. The details that you see when you are within the landscape get lost. The human eye not only perceives the totality of the scene, but at the same time also many details. This happens completely unintentionally by scanning the field of vision captured by the eye. Of course, it is not possible to capture in just one image what the human brain generates in terms of visual impressions. And of course all other sensory perceptions such as smell, temperature, wind or the feeling of freedom when standing on a lonely mountain and seeing islands 50 km away are missing. Nevertheless, by combining several shots in a collage, you can - at least - show a little more than in just one picture of the entire landscape. As the creator of a collage, you therefore have the opportunity to interpret and you can focus on very specific features of the particular landscape that are important to you. However, what you focus on doesn't have to be the same as what the viewer would actually see and focus on if he would be there. It remains your interpretation and is certainly also influenced by your current mood, just as the mood of the viewer also plays a role when looking at the picture. The two examples shown here illustrate how the combination of images may certainly change the impression the viewer experiences when looking at the collages. Then you should shoot film. And doing so is even more fun (and more challenging) using an old camera. My father left me a Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex. It was not used for at least 40 years. I was not even sure if this camera would still work. So I tried. The Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex Ib (856/16) was build in the years 1954 to 1957. The main lens is a Carl Zeiss Tessar with 75 mm f/3.5. I loaded a role of Ilford HP5 Plus (ISO 400) 120 roll film. For metering I used the exposure I got from my Sony A7RIII, adjusted it slightly using spot metering, zone system and imagination how I wanted the final image to look like. This process already worked very well for films I shot in my Rolleiflex SL35. Then I sent the film for developing and scanning to a lab. The results are pretty amazing. The shutter seems to work very well, the defects in the front lens element seem not to disturb the image quality too much. The Tessar is very sharp and gives a nice Bokeh if used wide open. The tonal contrast and the grain of the film is beautiful. Due to the large medium format the photographs are very sharp with finer grain when compared to the same film in full frame (135/36).
